snapEdge does not work wonders, it sometimes works and sometimes not.
What it does is that it finds the features on STL surfaces and maps the selected patches to those lines/edges.

To install it, unpack it anywhere with 'tar zxfv snapEdge.tgz'. Go to the snapEdge directory and run wmake.
There is a snapEdgeDict example in there as well.

I highly recommend running checkMesh after running snapEdge.
