In the source code of the tool sum is used to calculate the total kinetic energy of all cells together in https://bitbucket.org/shor-ty/totalkineticenergy/src/93aa6aa43b82fd16702b02de28061f339028b545/totalKineticEnergy.C?at=master#cl-65. Why don't you use gSum? Then you should be able to do the calculation in parallel.
