I think it would be best to first discuss new topics here before adding them to the main page (especially if you don't agree with something people say there or if you're offering alternatives - like the Github or Bitbucket-entry). That way it can be avoided that large chunks of text will be afterwards "edited away". Which for some people will look like censorship

I personally don't mind that my proposal get's scratched away from the main page at all - the page then can serve as a proposal summary (not get burried in a discussion) and then removed later if people are against it. but I definitely agree with you on this, others may feel differently about this.
